The World We Live In

Tweets, emails, texts, posts, live updates.  Let's face it.  Our lives are interrupted by these dings, buzzes and "You've got mails" more than ever before.   That coupled with the rate that change is happening, I can't but think it's only going to get worse (or better depending on your perspective).  Whatever the case,  with the impact of technology in my life, I just feel like I can't keep up.

Don't get me wrong, I love my gadgets as much as the next guy. In fact, everyone in my family has their favorite gadget.  You might even consider us an iFamily.  They're amazing, and they allow us to connect with our family at home, pursue interests online, and create family memories with photo albums and movies.  Not only that, they provide countless hours of entertainment and learning opportunities.

Having said that, I can't help but think that technology has some downers. It seems to fragment my thinking when I try to process and respond to the overwhelming numbers of emails. During dinner, our phones ping with incoming texts. I also find myself behind the computer screen a lot more than I used to. (Of course the irony is that I'm behind the computer screen to write this post!)

Not only that, some days we spend more time on our devices than we do interacting with each other.  Just the other day, I looked up from my computer and noticed that we were all on some sort of iPad or iPhone at once.  Sure we were together, but were we really together?  (Of course the irony is I'm writing this post on my computer when I could be playing with my kids).

So how does technology impact your life?  Do the benefits outweigh the drawbacks in your opinion?  What about the future of technology?

  1. I think that was a great post, Mr. Riley. You really shared your opinion and what the effects of technology are in your life. I argree with both your ideas. Sometimes technology is good but sometimes it can be bad. You just have to find the right balance.
I also think that it stops people from interacting with each other. Like sometimes I text the person who is right next to me when I could be talking to them or my dad is on his phone the whole time at dinner or on a holiday. Yet, I think it's good because instead of having to stay in Singapore to be with the people, he can talk to them while he's with us in a different country.

  2. I agree with you Mr. Riley, we all spend a lot of time on our computers and phones and not enough time outside. I like how you also put a video that explains the topic that you wrote about.

  3. This idea makes me think about how the devices we use these days might be taking over our lives, to sort of say. It takes over us in good and bad ways of course. We use these devices everyday to learn in school and to do homework/work and I think that ever since computers were invented, it has taken our history to a whole new level. That's good because we can do work faster, invent new things, and do things we have never done before. The bad thing about this is that, yes, we don't get to interact more often. As well as the the more technology we use, the more we can't really do things be ourselves because our trusty computer will always be there to do things for us. I think that these devices will continue to evolve/grow, but we always have to remember where technology started and how to do things 'the old fashioned' way.

  4. I agree with you. Technology is a big part of our lives and for most people, they 'can't live without' their new ipad or cellphone. It can help us, yet at the same time it can take over your life. The video perfectly showed what technology can do to the world. I was very surprised at the statistics in the video! I agree with you with the part about how you stated that it stops connection, I have texted somebody sitting right next to me... Twice! But I can also see how it affects you positively, with connections with your friends, like skype or facebook, and tools like looking at the same document as somebody miles and miles away. Technology can impact your life, but you have to decide wether it will be good or bad

  5. This is really great post and what I learned from this post is that technology is flawed in the way of being flawless. Technology is flawless because it completes many work for many different people. But technology is flawed because it is so perfect. Being perfect is not the best because it fits everybody's needs, and when technology fails us, we have nowhere to go. Sure, we should use it once in a while, but too much can lead to our own downfall. I think everybody should start relying more on their brain than their iPod.

  7. Awesome post, Mr.Riley! I loved the detail that you put in to move the post along smoothly. Technology effects my life a lot because it's a way of how I can communicate with people around the world and to also play games on. It think there are equal good & bad things about electronic. One good thing is you don't have to write a letter or homework, you can type it on a computer. An bad thing is that you get glues to them and slip away from some things, like homework or your daily routine. You also get worse eye sight if you use a electronic too long, too. I think the future of technology cannot be guessed. I mean, like someone first invented a computer. Then came a normal laptop. Then came a computer with a finger scanner, then a screen that flips. It goes on and on. I think maybe if these things keep going on, things will get out of hand. People will get lazy. People won't care about things. They will just sit around all day with their iPhone. I agree to Vivek, we should rely on our brain more then our gadgets.

  8. I agree with you that technology is advancing rapidly, and we need to be more out and about and physically social more.

But I would like to think that all this advancing is a great thing! After all, it's opening a whole new world of possibilities! There's nothing wrong for opening a world of possibilities though, is there?

Beside that you are VERY persuasive, and you have very strong reasons and claims, but I totally lost it almost when it sounded like you disliked the fact that technology is advancing.

  9. I agree with your post Mr. Riley but sometimes we need to use our electronics for work or schoolwork and to communicate with family members in other countries. But other times when we are just using them for our entertainment and we should have used that time for our family's.

  11. I agree with this post Mr.Riley but sometimes we have to use our phones. One reason is because what if there is an emergency and you have to use your phone. Another reason is for email or if a child and him/her friends are going somewhere alone they need to use there phone. Though I do agree with you people shouldn't just have there nose stuffed in there phone.
